The home of alpinism. Whymper, Charlet, Bonati, Bonington, Whyllans, Accelerace... (spot the odd one out). Krakauer described it as the "death-sport capital of the world", but either way, you'd be hard pushed to find a better alpine town from whence to launch (or not) climbing expeditions, with such an exceptional array of famous peaks within spitting distance. The Aiguille Verte, the Dru, Les Grande Jorasses, The Aiguille du Midi, and of course Mont Blanc - take your pick (or opt for some of the slightly more attainable mountains). If you'd rather keep your feet closer to the ground, there's also some sport climbing and bouldering in the valley.
