Friday/Saturday 24th/25th July 2009
Route
The route starts at Silver Sands campsite in Portnaluchaig, and leads out on the B8008 (South) to the A830 South towards Fort William. The map below shows the start point. You can zoom out and pan around the map by right-clicking on it.
The route follows the A830 to just before Fort William, turning left onto the B8004 towards Spean Bridge. Before Spean Bridge it turns left onto the A82 to Invergarry. Once at Invergarry the route turns left onto the A87, and follows this all the way through Shiel Bridge where it swings right and follows the right hand edge of Loch Duich, past Castle Eilean Donan (as featured in a variety of films, and a BBC advert), towards Auchtertyre, where the route turns right and climbs the A890, passing Stromeferry, and following the eastern shore of Loch Carron. At the T-junction at New Kelso the route heads right, still on the A890, all the way to Achnasheen, where it turns left onto the A832 to Kinlochewe. It then turns left onto the A896, which it follows till the Applecross peninsular. The route then winds its way around the little coast road, skirting the peninsular till Applecross itself, at which point it turns left, up over the Pass of the Cattle, back down to Tornapress. Then it's right, back onto the A896, through Lochcarron and back to New Kelso. The route retraces its steps back to Auchtertyre, where this time it turns right and heads for Kyle of Lochalsh on the A87, crossing the bridge onto Skye, and follows the A87 until turning left onto the A851 to Armadale. The ferry runs from Armadale back to Mallaig.
