The Accelerace Greenland Expedition was a huge success, with the team making first ascents of several peaks in Liverpoolland, as well as putting up a selection of new routes. There is a full expedition report in production, and a photo gallery of the trip is being compiled.

Descending from Peak 1088, after climbing My New Favourite Thing

In June/July 2006, Team Accelerace mounted an expedition to Liverpoolland, in North East Greenland.

Destination

The destination was Liverpoolland, on the North Eastern coast of Greenland. East Greenland or the "backside" as Greenlanders sometimes refer to it, is one of the greatest wilderness areas in the world with endless numbers of fjords, mountains, glaciers, valleys and lakes. Scoresby Sound, by Constable Point is the largest fjord in the world. The highest peaks in Liverpoolland are Krosbjerg at 1400m, and Tvillingerne at 1430m.  Whilst the peaks are not particularly tall, there is a wealth of climbing in the area, including numerous unclimbed peaks and routes, with the climbing largely alpine in style – exposed and moderately technical.

Objectives

Prior to going, the team highlighted a number of specific objectives for the expedition. These included 3 first ascents by new routes on previously climbed peaks, and a first ascent of an unclimbed peak.

The team

Jim, Tom and Chris. Between them they've climbed pretty extensively, across the Alps, Pyrenees, the Himalaya, Cordillera Blanca and both Iceland and Greenland in the past. Dartmoor, North Wales and the Avon Gorge provide climbing venues closer to home.

Itinerary

Flying from the UK on 27 June, arriving in Greenland on 28 June. The expedition will be base-camped near to Constable Point.

Various reconnaissance trips will be undertaken in the first week, followed by the 4 chief ascents, and any others identified during reconnaissance.

Returning to the UK on 14 July.

The expedition was kindly supported by Snow & Rock, who helped with kit and equipment. Check the gear section of the site for reviews of key kit items used on the expedition.
