Briefing Notes
This page is to cover off on a few more of the important details to bear in mind for the race – if anything is unclear, please do get in touch.
ITINERARY
Friday
16:00 – Race briefing. This will take place at the Morfa campsite, on the lower field, by the large mess tent, which should be fairly visible. We will run through a couple of logistical issues for the next morning, collect contact details from you and your support crews, issue race narratives and be available to answer any questions which you may have for the next day.
IMPORTANT – do not panic if you are not going to make it to Llanrhystud in time for this. If this is the case, simply let us know in advance (preferably sooner rather than later). We’ll be around all evening, and can arrange to meet a little later if more convenient, or, if you’re absolutely not going to be around till very late, we can have a quick chat the following morning. Either way – please let us know as soon as possible.
Saturday
04:45 – Meet at start line. Please try and be on time, since we’d like to start promptly, and will just point out the swim course beforehand. If you want to arrive earlier, to set up your transition area or test the water, then please do. Equally, your support crews can probably set up your transition area, so as long as you’re ready in your wetsuit at 04:45 we’ll be happy.
05:00 – Start – the swim will consist of two laps of a c2 mile loop (clearly marked with buoys).
Saturday night – items to note:
This year we have decided to bring the swim earlier in order to give you the highest chance of completing the race in some form of daylight. There is a high likelihood that you will be running through the night, and this is to be expected for most competitors. Please therefore be aware that you need to have a plan for support through the night – we would suggest your support car stays fairly close and that you have plenty of spare clothing and kit available, as well as plenty of food and drink. It is important to be aware of the following:
1. The cycle actually finishes in Llanberis, not at Pen y Pas as per the map on the site. 2. The run route has been altered to remove the final loop through Llanberis. 3. There is a section towards the end of the course which is entirely off-road for about 2.5 miles (immediately before you re-enter Lalnberis). We insist that you have a head-torch for this section (if tackled in darkness), and strongly recommend a small rucksack or bag in which you can carry an extra layer and food. If possible we would suggest that one of your support crew accompanies you for this section, especially if in the dark.
Adverse weather – contingency plans
We’re very conscious that the event is extremely arduous in good weather. In the event of the weather being deemed to make the event hazardous, we reserve the right to make such adjustments to the course or race itinerary as deemed fit. In other words, we’ll be paying very close attention to the weather and if it’s really bad, may take action in the interests of your safety. The likely outcome of any really bad weather is that we either shorten or cancel the swim – if the sea is too rough for this to go ahead.
We’re extremely unlikely to make any changes to the bike section, but would advise you again to make sure you check the forecast and have sufficient wet weather gear to see you through both the bike and the run. This isn’t supposed to paint a bleak picture – and the long-range forecast is not too bad for the weekend, but just to let you know what our contingency plans are in the event of poor weather.
Support cars
It’s important to note that when interacting with your support car, both you and the car must be stationary – i.e. no being handed food or anything else out of the window whilst moving Tour-de-France style. Please make sure your car has plenty of water on board as well as food and other nutrition – there are a couple of shops and petrol stations along the course, but it’s best not to rely on these. Please do drive responsibly, and when stopping, do so in a safe location. Please don’t let your support car drive too close to you – as much for your own safety as to avoid any unfair drafting. Likewise, it’s worth working out a system for your support car to advise you of any upcoming turns in the route in advance of the race.
Good Luck! |
