Stuart Reid wins inaugural West Highlands Ultra!!! Excellent performances from all competitors, on what was an exceptionally challenging event - conditions were good for the most of the day, but a major weather front moving in overnight made what is already a very tough run even tougher. Stuart Reid finished in 20hr19, an excellent performance based on his very strong swim time (1hr 21), with Gary Fegan setting the fastest run time (a blistering 7hr07 for the 35 mile course, including the 2,000ft climb to the Pass of the Cattle). Paul McGreal came in third in 23hr31, seemingly still in just as positive a mood as he had been in throughout the day, and barely showing the effects of the race, whilst Nick Mansley finished in 23hr55, beating his 24 hour target by 5 minutes, and after running down from the Pass under the open boot of his support car, to give himself some shelter from the appalling weather.
The cold water sadly meant 3 competitors withdrew during the swim, whilst Carl Atkinson had mechnical issues on the bike which hampered his progress, and a slower run (injury-induced) meant he was left in the thick of the appalling weather that moved in overnight with 18 miles left to go, and The Pass of the Cattle yet to climb. After holing up in his support car for a couple of hours, he made the very painful (but very wise) decision to withdraw.
A mention must be made of the incredible stamina and long-suffering good humour of the various support crews - who helped their respective athletes through a very challenging event.
Huge congratulations to all - expect a full report on the site in the next day or so, as well as event photos and video. And check back for full details of the 2009 event - to be published on the site soon!!
