West Highlands Ultra 2008 Competitor Profile

Competitor #10 Nick Mansley
From: Cambridge
Club: Cambridge Tri Club
DOB: 26/06/1965

1. What’s your best previous race result?
I was once 3rd in a x-country race at school about 25 years ago
2. Describe your racing style in three words.. Surprisingly quick tortoise
3. What’s your most exotic previous race (of any discipline)? Not a race but I trekked for 10 days by myself through the Sierra Nevada in California in September several years ago – good for training the mind!
4. Longest distance event (any discipline) previously completed?Ironman UK last year…at the time it didn’t seem very far
5. How much training do you do in an average week? It was about 10 hours a week but has picked up now there is more daylight for cycling – with one week of 25 hours but generally work and family commitments make it very difficult to get anything like that in
6. When was the last time you fell off your bike? Collided with a lorry in January – apart from that it has been silly ones when I forget I am clipped in pulling up at shops – fortunately when people haven’t been looking
7. How long have you been training for the West Highlands Ultra (or how long will you have been training for..?) Not long enough!  I only took up triathlon last year and whilst I have always been a competent runner I am still a rubbish swimmer but should be OK on the bike.
8. How did you hear about the West Highlands Ultra? Can’t remember – I was looking for something to do earlier in the summer than the ironman UK so I could relax and drink lots of my brother’s very fine beer (Hip Hop – if you are ever down in W Sussex) in the summer.
9. What are you looking forward to most about the event? The scenery – and hopefully that feeling when you know you are going to finish in a reasonable time.
10. Do you know anyone else taking part? No. I’ve tried to get other people interested but they think I am a complete nutter.
11. How many years have you been taking part in triathlon for? One.  I might retire for a bit after this
12. How many years have you spent in multisport (including swimming/cycling/running etc)? Does carrying young children/playing football/ running count – if so about 14 years
13. What's been your most amusing racing experience so far? Seeing my brother Steve have a cigarette just before he ran the London marathon was quite funny.
14. Do you have a message do you for any of the other competitors? Have fun – it would be nice for me to catch someone up on the bike leg.
15. In terms of competitiveness, are you coming to Scotland to:

a. win? b. enjoy yourself? c. survive? d. other (please specify)

Survive the cold in the swim, enjoy myself on the bike and challenge myself on the run.

16. If you have them confirmed already, please provide the names of your support crew (and short (ie couple of words) description, if you wish)

Steve Mansley – my brother – will be with me at the swim, start and finish of the bike leg and run.

Claire Shaw (my cousin), Paul Shaw (her husband) and their kids Emma and Kirsty,  - will take over for most of the bike leg

17. Your favourite tri-related item? Vaseline.
