There are a few essential features and rules which apply to the Accelerace West Highlands Ultra Triathlon, reflecting the unique nature of the race, the setting and the distance of the course. The importance of these should not be under-estimated, and all of them have to adhered to strictly. If you have any queries about any of these at all, please don't hesitate to contact us at ultratri@accelerace.co.uk
1. Every competitor must* have a support vehicle with driver. We would highly recommend having two drivers, for added safety. Competitors may share support vehicles, but do so on the assumption that those sharing the vehicle will be remaining in close proximity to each other throughout the race. For further details on the role and importance of the support vehicle, please see the separate section under the tab above.
*please note that we will consider on a case-by-case basis entries without support vehicles - see the section on support for further details.
2. All competitors must be fully aware of the nature of the event - this is a particularly rigorous endurance triathlon, and is likely to take in total a good deal longer than an Ironman-distance event. Whilst we in no way see it as a pre-requisite, previous experience of an Ironman or ultra-distance triathlon or a similar endurance event involving prolonged periods of vigorous physical exertion would be valuable to any competitor contemplating participating in this event. If you think you would like to take part but are unsure as to whether you would be capable of finishing, feel free to contact us to discuss your situation or ask any questions you may have at the above email address.
3. A wetsuit is mandatory for the swim - the water is likely to be cold. All competitors will be provided with a swimming hat, but may wish to double up.
4. A hard-shell helmet is mandatory for the cycle. We would also recommend having available a selection of cycling clothing to ensure that competitors are as comfortable as possible during the cycle leg. For more detail on recommended support equipment, please see the support section.
5. A small bag (either a bumbag or rucksack) is mandatory for the run, to contain a waterproof top, warm hat/gloves, emergency blanket, whistle and head torch with spare batteries. Some form of nutrition is also advisable. This is as a result of part of the run being off-road, and hence out of reach from competitors' support vehicles.
6. There will be no prescribed cut-off times. This is clearly unusual, and is manageable only through the organisational structure we have in place for the event. It means, however, that competitors and their support teams should be prepared for a long race.
